transmediale Marshall McLuhan Lecture is a collaboration between transmediale and the Embassy of Canada in Berlin. This event takes place as part of the Embassy’s program to celebrate the 150^th anniversary of Canadian confederation.

DE Die diesjährige transmediale Marshall McLuhan Lecture hält Prof. Sarah Sharma (Direktorin des McLuhan-Programms für Kultur und Technologie der Universität Toronto). In ihrer jüngsten Forschung beschäftigt sie sich mit einer männlichen Fantasie des Ausstiegs, die sich in allen Gesellschaftsbereichen manifestiert: in nationalistischen Bewegungen, wie auch im allgegenwärtigen Streben nach Automatisierung und in der Idee, der Arbeit zu entfliehen. In ihrem Vortrag wird Sharma u.a. der Frage nachgehen, ob eine ‚feministische Ausstiegs-Bewegung’ denkbar ist. Wer wird die Scherben auflesen, wenn die Roboter gegangen sind?

EN This year’s transmediale Marshall McLuhan Lecture is delivered by Sarah Sharma, Associate Professor and Director of the McLuhan Program in Culture and Technology at the University of Toronto. Her recent research analyzes the male fantasy of exit as it manifests in nationalist movements, the omnipresent drive towards automation, and the concept of escaping work. In her talk, Sharma will consider whether a door has opened for a feminist exit movement. Who will pick up the pieces when the robots leave and there is nowhere left to go?

FR Cette année, la conférence « transmediale Marshall McLuhan Lecture » sera tenue par Sarah Sharma, professeure associée et directrice du Programme McLuhan en culture et en technologie de l’Université de Toronto. Ses recherches récentes analysent le fantasme masculin du ‘retrait’ tel qu’il se manifeste dans les mouvements nationalistes, la tendance omniprésente vers l’automatisation et l’idée de ‘fuir’ le travail. Dans sa conférence, Mme Sharma se demandera si une porte a été ouverte pour un mouvement de ‘retrait’ féministe. Qui ramassera les morceaux quand les robots seront partis?

DE Im Rahmen der transmediale 2017 präsentiert der Marshall McLuhan Salon der Botschaft von Kanada eine Ausstellung des kanadischen Künstlers Ben Bogart (Vancouver): Die Arbeit Watching (Blade Runner) (2016) ist der neueste Teil der Serie Watching and Dreaming, in der der Künstler Machine Learning- und Computer Vision-Algorithmen zur Debatte stellt, indem er beliebte filmische Darstellungen künstlicher Intelligenz auseinandernimmt und neu zusammensetzt. Der Marshall McLuhan Salon beherbergt das größte audiovisuelle Archiv rund um dem kanadischen Medienphilosophen Herbert Marshall McLuhan außerhalb Kanadas.

EN As part of transmediale 2017, the Embassy of Canada’s Marshall McLuhan Salon presents an exhibition by Vancouver based artist Ben Bogart: His work Watching (Blade Runner) (2016) is the latest instalment of the series Watching and Dreaming in which the artist investigates machine learning and computer vision algorithms by taking apart and reconstructing popular cinematic depictions of artificial intelligence. The Marshall McLuhan Salon has the largest audiovisual archive about the Canadian media philosopher Herbert Marshall McLuhan outside of Canada.

FR À l’occasion de la transmediale 2017, le Salon Marshall McLuhan de l’Ambassade du Canada présentera une exposition de l’artiste canadien Ben Bogart (Vancouver) : son œuvre Watching (Blade Runner) (2016) est la plus récente installation de la série Watching and Dreaming, dans le cadre de laquelle l’artiste enquête sur l’apprentissage machine et les algorithmes de vision artificielle en démontant et en reconstruisant plusieurs représentations cinématographiques populaires de l’intelligence artificielle. Le Salon Marshall McLuhan abrite la plus grande collection en dehors du Canada d’archives audiovisuelles autour du philosophe des médias canadien, Herbert Marshall McLuhan.
